Points of Departure (excerpt from magazine review)
by Southeast Performer Magazine

Lunasect is an electronic band in the more classically "new wave" sense, taking their cues from Depeche Mode not Deepsky, the Cure not the Chemical Brothers...slinky - suited for low lit lounges not large scale raves - Lunasect were anything but another Crystal Method, though there was a chemistry there. Must have been a combustible one, though, because on the release of their latest, Points of Departure, Lunasect is now comprised of Jonathan Hyatt,Daniel Farris and new lead vocalist Jessica Grant.

Simmering sensually, Grant brings to Lunasect a more forceful attitude. Though she carries a touch of the Tori Amos, as is seemingly ever present in this "genre", she doesn't overshadow the music, which has become increasingly fluid, moving past the breathy vocals-and-breakbeats stage. It's almost like Lunasect now take a more Pink Floyd approach to using synthesizers in moody progressive rock, not progressively trying to rock moody synthesizers. The Pink Floyd influence can be heard most in tracks like "Next Exit", which screams "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Don't fear that Lunasect have gotten lost on the dark side of the moon, however. For fans of their established sound, the sinister live baritone guitar of the forefathers New Order and the Cure still wanders in on candy-stripped legs, and ambient washes float alongside eerie melodies. They may have computers, but Lunasect are more Cocteau Twins than Aphex Twin. The band has simply tightened its grip, not transferred its focus, on its ambitions. With POINTS OF DEPARTURE - Lunasect have shown they are not a band that has plans to be boxed in. -Tony Ware

  "Amphibious"
  CD  LPS  8   2002-04-02
 List: $16.98 (Save 47%)
 Your Price: $8.95

"Following the success of two international tours, Breastfed releases the groundbreaking full-length debut entitled Amphibious. Amphibious combines dark trance, techno and drum and bass influences into skillfully produced songs with vocals by Karen Gilliam, Chris Andrew, Ji-Young Kim, and Rohini Upyaday. The mastermind behind Breastfed is Eric Monse, DJ and veteran beat producer, intimate with all things dark and ominous. In one sickly mutated form or another Eric has appeared on every Louipimps compilation since Variable One. Eric's trademark is fierce rhythms and clever dancefloor production interwoven with dark vocals and actual thought-provoking lyrics. This comes through in full intensity on the 11 song full-length, Amphibious."

The Variable concept is to include a variety of electronic music styles on one album. We feel that all of these songs have something in common and finding that common bond is a way of exposing new sounds to listeners who may have only enjoyed one particular style of electronic music in the past. I hope you have as much fun listening to this album as we did making it.

Capsule's debut release on LOUiPiMPS is an amazing album featuring a very mature electronica sound.

CAPSULE are a quintet from Los Angeles, California. The debut album features strong rhythm, beats, trip hop, pop, contemporary sounds, and melody. Most songs were created by accident. We like to start with a weird sound and let it take form until we reach the end. Using various bits, pieces and samples, weaving guitar lines, and unpredictable vocal melodies, CAPSULE will certainly catch the ears of music lovers everywhere. Already the response from the local market has been quick and impressive. The music that is the basis of CAPSULE is a collaboration of songwriters including but not always limited to the 5 members of the group. The vocal lines and piano are recorded and sang by Laura Derby. The bass, programming and some keyboards are mostly by The Prophet. Paul David writes and performs the guitar and some keyboard. Vernon Salyers performs and writes the keyboard parts. Cosmo Jones has recently added his drums, percussive and songwriting skills. Jim Chaney (former Jimmies Chicken Shack , and currently Cirrus drummer) added his talents to some tracks. Jonathen Paul (Terminal 3, and 6 Degrees recording artist) inspired some songs as well.

SPINACH music is future music. A future where jungle is pop and rock is trance, where dubs are hooks and lyrics are mantras. Infusing an intense rock lineup with loops, synths, turntables, and other mystical gadgetries, SPINACH pushes eclectic pop into a vital, flowing, ecstatic groove. DJ culture has gone live.
With members from New York, California and Paris, SPINACH music is international in it’s appeal, very Los Angeles at heart (headquarters), and always searching for new ground.. Their debut release, “We Ventured…and We Won”, is named after a dub from a NASA educational record that is used on the first track. And the samples just keep piling up, from Confucius to Richard Simmons, over 55 seamless minutes of music, each song mixing into the next. With the BPM starting at 100 (the happy hippie trip-hop of “Into the Sun”) and gradually pushing up to 160 (the go-go rock/jungle of “Crashing Car”), the 11-song collection plays like a DJ set.
