Lou Donaldson joins Jimmy Smith's trio for one of the organist's final Blue Note sessions before he moved to Verve. Donaldson had played with Smith often in the '50s and their chemistry never diminished. Here they tackle a wide range of material including Percy Mayfield's magnifient ballad "Please Send Me Someone To Love." This album is issued on CD for the first time.

The magic that Jimmy Smith and Stanley Turrentine created together never failed to produce masterful music. This album was Smith's last for Blue Note before moving to Verve. Turrentine and Smith's trio dig in on some great '40s material like "Red Top" and the Louis Jordan hit "Stone Cold Dead In The Market," but it's always the blues (the title tune) that steals the show. Two tracks by the same personnel from an earlier session complete the CD.
Sonny Rollins
"Newk's Time"
CD CAP 90833 2004-03-23
List: $12.98 (Save 23%)
Your Price: $9.95
Sonny Rollins was particularly inspired during this session, thanks in part to Philly Joe Jones' exceptional drumming. Their duet on "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" is a highlight. Though overshadowed by his extraordinary A Night At The Village Vanguard at the time of release, Newk's Time has aged beautifully.
Horace Silver
"The Cape Verdean Blues"
CD CAP 90839 2004-03-23
List: $12.98 (Save 23%)
Your Price: $9.95
Like its predecessor Song For My Father, this album explores Horace Silver's Cape Verdean roots while staying firmly rooted in the hard bop tradition which he pioneered. Joe Henderson and Woody Shaw were among his best hornmen and J.J. Johnson guests for the second half of this excellent title by one of the finest composers and band leaders in modern jazz.
Cecil Taylor
"Conquistador!"
CD CAP 90840 2004-03-23
List: $12.98 (Save 23%)
Your Price: $9.95
This album and Unit Structures (made earlier the same year for Blue Note) were the first recordings of the fully matured Cecil Taylor. The pianist/composer finally mastered the art of mixing composed and improvised music into a dense, powerful soundscape and found musicinas who understood his concept. Andrew Cyrille brings Taylor's unique rhythmic sense to life with ferocious power. An avant garde classic with one alternate take added to the original album.
Stanley Turrentine
"Never Let Me Go"
CD CAP 90838 2004-03-23
List: $12.98 (Save 23%)
Your Price: $9.95
Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott were more than a musical team in the '60s; they were husband and wife. This album spawned two classic performances - their versions of Lloyd Price's "Trouble" and Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child." Scott and Turrentine were that rare breed who blended techique, musical intelligence and soulfulness to make music that had it all. One bonus track has been added to the original album.
