Review 1
While jazz fans can always find something to argue about, no one disputes that Saxophone Colossus is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Taped while Soony was a member of the Clifford Brown/Max Roach quintet, and providing one of the earliest forums for the lyical genius of Tommy Flanagan, the session drove home the marriage of intellect, wit, soul, and guts that would mark Rollins as a paragon of improvised music. |
Review 2
Three originals are highlights, including the calypso "St. Thomas," the hard-swinging "Strode Rode," and the ultimate model of thematic improvisation, "Blue 7"; but every measure of music on every track established a standard of jazz excellence that holds to this day. - Highly Recommended! |
