Review 1
Joe Henderson's third Blue Note release (which is here reissued on CD along with the addition of a previously unissued version of the title cut) matches the very distinctive tenor with the veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham and an unbeatable rhythm section: pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Richard Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. Henderson, who has always had the ability to make a routine bop piece sound complex and the most complicated free improvisation seem logical, and Dorham provided all of the material and the music still sounds fresh over three decades later. |
Review 2
Not two weeks after taking part in Andrew Hill's landmark Point of Departure session, Joe Henderson and Kenny Dorham teamed up again for Henderson's third release as a leader, In 'N Out. As was the case on his two previous albums, the emerging tenor master and his trumpet-playing mentor split the writing duties: Dorham contributed "Short Story" and "Brown's Town," while Henderson weighed in with "Punjab," the now-famous "Serenity," and the title track, a vehicle for fast and fierce modal improvisation (heard in both master and alternate takes). While Henderson was making tremendous strides in originality by this point, his debt to John Coltrane was underscored by the presence on this session of McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. (Playing bass was the esteemed Richard Davis, also a Point of Departure participant.) Interestingly, Henderson documented his association with Tyner and Jones roughly three weeks before Wayne Shorter would do the same on his Blue Note debut, Night Dreamer. Some three years later, Tyner would hire Henderson, Jones, and bassist Ron Carter to play on his Blue Note masterpiece The Real McCoy, which, like In 'N Out, has become a canonical text of hard-charging, open-form improvisation. |
