This amazing 1969 nonet session, released here for the first time, features spectacular writing by Hill that presages his current big band. The instrumentation is one reed (doubling on tenor, soprano, alto flute and English hor), two trumpets, trombone, French horn, tuba (doubling on bass clarient), piano, bass and drums. Joe Farrell, Woody Shaw, Dizzy Reece, Julian Priester and Hill are the principal soloist, and the compositions are varied and inventinve. A real find!
