Mode for Joe brought Joe Henderson's 1960s Blue Note career to a triumphant close. Henderson's "A Shade of Jade," with its dark, swirling timbres and odd rhythmic emphases, sets an adventurous tone at the outset. Walton's "Mode for Joe" follows, its bright theme giving way to a bouncy two-chord vamp that elicits coarse, multiphonic cries from Henderson's horn. Another Walton vehicle, the brisk minor-key "Black," appears in both master and alternate takes. "Caribbean Fire Dance," one of the more unusual tunes in the Blue Note library, practically belongs to drummer Joe Chambers, who delivers a series of thunderous fills during the climactic shout chorus. Henderson's uptempo minor blues "Granted" and Morgan's Messenger-esque "Free Wheelin'" close out the disc. Preview tracks
