 Review 1
George Wein, in his liner notes for this classic session, says that "to hear this album is to believe fully in the validity and lasting qualities of jazz." How right he is. Ellington was between recording contracts at the time, and producer Alan Douglas, hustling to get some product out on United Artists, brought him together with two modern musicians who practically idolized him. The results, which sound much better on CD than they did on LP, reveal the continuity of jazz, grounded in the blues. Mingus was reportedly quite nervous at the session, and perhaps it's this tension that contributes to his energized conversational style. Roach is an equal partner in the group, with his precise and flowing rhythms. It's one of the great piano trio records. Preview tracks
