 Review 1
Whistle Stop, an all-original, mid-career outing by Kenny Dorham, showcases not only the brilliance of the great trumpeter, but also that of tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. An esteemed ex-Messenger (like Dorham), Mobley had recently joined Miles Davis's quintet and would cut the classic Live at the Blackhawk with the group three months after this session.

Pianist Kenny Drew also plays beautifully throughout Whistle Stop. Bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, two more veterans of the Miles Davis experience, provide an absolutely huge groove, particularly on the back-to-back blues charts "Philly Twist" and "Buffalo." On the more enigmatic pieces, "Sunset" and "Sunrise in Mexico," one gets a glimpse of the advanced harmonies Dorham would later explore with his protégé, Joe Henderson. The band romps impressively through "Rhythm" and "Sweet Georgia Brown" changes on "Whistle Stop" and "Windmill," respectively. And the closing, minute-long "Dorham's Epitaph," as Ira Gitler explains in the original liner notes, is from a longer orchestral work that never came to pass. Dorham had hoped to have Leonard Bernstein conduct it, but sadly, the tune now functions exactly as its title suggests. Preview tracks
