What is a "Hoosier Mystic"? They are several in number: a semi-mythical cadre of Indiana born and bred post-bop jazz musicians, including Al Kiger, Cal Collins, Paul Plummer, David Young and - Ralston "Morgy" Craig. Hoosier Mystic is one of the few recordings of a much respected and admired tenor saxophonist on the Midwest jazz scene. In the words of producer/pianist Phil DeGreg: "I was determined to produce this recording so that everybody could remember him as he played that day: loose, happy, warm, and soulful as ever." Morgy Craig had a big sound, he was creative, inventive and compelling. Although he might have been a major player in the jazz world he chose to remain in the Midwest with his family - helping to raise nine children. This recording exudes Morgy's warmth both in his playing and in his priceless spoken introductions and interludes. The booklet includes tributes from the musicians who knew him and photos from the Craig family archives. Hoosier Mystic is a live recording featuring Morgy accompanied by the Phil DeGreg Trio. This album features Morgy's rendition of a number of jazz classics, and it swings from start to finish.
