Review 1
On Homage, his second date as a leader on J Curve, guitarist Randy Johnston pays tribute to several of his musical mentors. His flawless playing showcased amidst settings for an ensemble including trumpet, tenor sax, baritone sax and trombone, by arranger Rick Shemaria, Randy and his fellow musicians perform and reinterpret compositions by George Benson, Jimi Hendrix, Kenny Burell, Dexter Gordon, Warne Marsh and others. Among a new generation of master jazz guitarists, Randy is setting a new standard of excellence. There is also a pair of tributes composed by the leader: Pat and Wes (for Martino and Montgomery) and Cedar's Place (for Cedar Walton) as well as songs associated with Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles. |
