The King of Swing is in superb form on these four November 1954 sessions, fronting a big band, a trio, and two different quintets. After an opening big-band romp on "Let's Dance," the quintet with Charlie Shavers, Mel Powell, George Duvivier, and Jo Jones takes over for five numbers - including previously unreleased takes of "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Slipped Disc." The big band (featuring a young Ruby Braff) moves to center stage for the next seven tracks. Most of these are Fletcher Henderson charts, although notable exceptions include Count Basie's "Jumpin' at the Woodside" and "Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today."
Tucked away mid-program are four more small-group tracks. "What Can I Say After I'm Sorry" and a previously unreleased "Rose Room" feature Goodman in a sublime trio setting with Mel Powell and drummer Bobby Donaldson. Braff and Duvivier then join in for the angular blues "Rock Rimmon" and Jimmy McHugh's "You're a Sweetheart." The big band returns to finish the set with four spirited numbers, including a closing reprise of "Let's Dance." Dan Morgenstern's liner notes put the music and the man in perspective. |
