Review 1
Few would quarrel with the assertion that Inner Urge is one of the most important tenor sax records ever made. This was Joe Henderson's first statement as a leader without trumpeter Kenny Dorham by his side. Playing with nearly oracular power and confidence, the then 27-year-old Henderson propels a quartet featuring McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones (both holdovers from In 'N Out, the previous record), as well as accomplished bassist Bob Cranshaw.
The title track, with its austere parallel harmonies and cascading melodic lines, can fairly be called Henderson's signature tune. The program also includes Henderson's knotty, intervallic blues head "Isotope" and a bare-bones, Spanish-tinged modal sketch called "El Barrio," along with a straight ballad reading of Duke Pearson's "You Know I Care" and a beautifully reharmonized "Night and Day." |
