Review 1
Sonny Clark's final Blue Note date features Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Charlie Rouse on tenor sax, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. Ike Quebec makes a heartwarming guest appearance on "Deep In a Dream," the session's only ballad.
For the most part, Leapin' and Lopin' showcases original compositions by Clark and his sidemen. It begins with Clark's stop-time minor blues refrain "Somethin' Special" and goes on to include the infectious "Melody for C," a stirring foray into modal territory which also appears in an alternate take on the CD reissue. Turrentine's partially Caribbean-influenced "Midnight Mambo" deepens the modal intrigue, while Warren's uptempo "Eric Walks" remains rooted in bebop (Ira Gitler, in his original liner notes, rightly points out its parallels to "Woody'n You"). Rounding out the program is Clark's relaxed but darkly hued "Voodoo," along with the unambiguously boppish "Zellmar's Delight," a newly unearthed original. |
