Review 1
This double-barreled date pulls off a happy meeting between Nancy Wilson, a hot jazz talent of her era (with much in store for her beyond jazz later) with the ineffably lively quintet of Cannonball Adderley, her #1 mentor in New York. It’s really a reunion, since young Nancy first sat in with Cannon in hometown Cincinnati; later he steered musicians and record execs to her first Gotham gigs at The Bronx’ Blue Morocco. They collaborate joyously on six tidy gems of unusual colors – bluesy numbers (Buddy Johnson’s “Save Your Love For Me” and Curtis Lewis’ “Little Unhappy Boy”) and neglected show tunes (“Never Will I Marry” from Most Happy Fella and “Happy Talk” from The King And I); they package the wailing into finely-etched cameos. Wilson’s feverish soprano combines Sarah Vaughan’s class and Dinah Washington’s earthiness; Cannon (who worked brilliantly with the aforesaid singers) and Nat play superb cameo choruses behind her, and the whole set’s over much too soon. Nancy parses a meticulous “The Masquerade Is Over” with just the trio: pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Louis Hayes. High vibes and high fives all around. The longer half of the CD is given over to superior studio tracks for the quintet, including smoking versions of Nat’s “Teaneck”, Jones’ “Unit 7” and featurettes for Cannon “I Can’t Get Started” and Nat “Never Say Yes.” |
