Review 1
The companion to Sunday at the Village Vanguard (the two CD reissues bring back nearly the entire night's music), this set features pianist Bill Evans, bassist Scott LaFaro (only ten days before his death in a car accident) and drummer Paul Motian stretching the boundaries of piano trio playing. Each of the musicians have a nearly equal role (although Evans is generally the lead voice among equals) and they consistently inspire each other. There are seven selections on this disc plus three alternate takes and the highlights include the two versions of Evans' most famous original "Waltz for Debby," a touching interpretation of "My Foolish Heart," "Some Other Time" and "Milestones." Highly recommended. — Scott Yanow |
